A useful comparison has five columns
Write down the operating airline, total journey time, baggage included, cabin on every leg, and the final payable total. Add change and cancellation conditions before deciding. A carrier cannot be named the cheapest for all travel dates, and an attractive headline fare can omit the extras you need.
Compare the cabin actually being sold
Premium economy, extra-legroom economy and business class are different products. For a business-class trip with a short regional connection, check whether that final sector has the same cabin and whether lounge access is included. Aircraft changes can affect seats; avoid treating an aircraft-specific photo as a guarantee.
Compare the consequences of a change
Ask for the airline change charge, fare difference, agency service fee and any deadline. A flexible fare can still require an additional fare payment when the new flight is more expensive. “Refundable” should be explained in terms of the amount, timing and applicable deductions.

Use the same travel dates, bags and cabin, then compare the actual stop pattern and total elapsed time. A suitable nonstop option may justify a higher total for a traveller avoiding transfers; a connecting itinerary may suit a different budget or departure airport. Read each quoted fare’s baggage conditions before deciding.
Ethiopian Airlines or Kenya Airways to Nairobi: which is cheaper?
Neither is always cheaper. Request like-for-like totals and check whether the offered routing includes a connection, the airline operating each sector, and the bags needed for any Mombasa extension. A cheaper long-haul ticket can become the more expensive full journey.
Virgin Atlantic vs British Airways to South Africa: is baggage identical?
No airline-wide answer covers every fare. Compare the actual fare brand and the allowance shown for your ticket, then add the bags needed for any separately booked South African flight. A no-checked-bag economy fare should not be compared against a bag-inclusive fare on price alone.
Qatar Airways or RwandAir for an indirect Ghana flight?
Compare the routings actually available, including elapsed time, connection airport and any backtracking. If you intend a visit en route, price it as a stopover with dates. The best choice for a short family visit may differ from the best choice for a longer multi-country itinerary.

Check the operating aircraft, cabin on all sectors, connection time, baggage and lounge access. A business-class label does not promise a lie-flat seat on every flight. Request the seat information for the actual quoted itinerary and decide which journey offers the rest and arrival time you need.
Virgin Atlantic vs Delta premium economy from the UK to the USA?
Identify the operating carrier and the specific cabin, rather than relying on the marketing airline. Check whether a US domestic connection is sold in a different cabin. Compare seat selection, bags and total fare, and distinguish premium economy from an economy extra-legroom product.
British Airways or United for a UK family group to America?
Compare individual fares with a group proposal for your actual party. Focus on deposits, final names, payment dates, baggage and permitted changes. Ask what happens if one person cancels; group conditions can differ from a normal individual ticket.
American Airlines vs British Airways to a regional US airport?
Compare the complete journey to the regional endpoint, not just the transatlantic sector. Check the operating airline on the domestic flight, transfer time and whether the sectors are issued together. Avoid airport changes that look short on paper but require a separate ground transfer.
Which transatlantic airline gives the cheapest fare with a checked bag?
Ask for the lowest suitable total including the bag you need in both directions. Fare brands, promotions and dates change the result; no carrier can reliably be named cheapest in advance. Also include any separate domestic baggage charge.
