PLAN WITH CONFIDENCE
Flying with elderly parents, children or infants from the UK
Plan assistance, realistic connections, seating and child fares for family flights from UK airports.
Planning guidance updated . Fares, schedules and entry conditions must be checked for your trip. How we prepare our travel guidance.
Choose the journey around the traveller
For an older parent, a slightly longer connection can be preferable to a short transfer involving queues and a distant gate. Compare the complete journey: travel to the UK airport, departure time, transfers, time seated and final collection. “Best airline” is less useful than an itinerary that fits their mobility, stamina and language needs.
Request the right assistance
Explain whether the traveller can walk through a terminal, climb aircraft steps and reach their seat. Mention their own mobility equipment without sending medical records through an enquiry form. The CAA recommends requesting help at booking or at least 48 hours before departure and keeping confirmation. Airport assistance does not replace a companion for personal care.
Separate seat, age and fare questions
Give each child’s age on departure and return. A child fare is not a fixed percentage off the total: taxes and charges can reduce the saving. An infant turning two during the trip needs special attention to seat and ticket requirements. Confirm seating together, bassinet availability and equipment acceptance before relying on them.
A useful family booking brief
Example: two adults, one child aged eight, one infant under two, two checked bags each for the adults, a pushchair, and a preference for one connection. Add the latest acceptable arrival time and whether a wheelchair is needed for one adult. This is more actionable than asking only for the cheapest family fare.
Official sources
Check the official source again before booking; a general guide cannot confirm an individual fare, permission or entitlement.
Your questions answered
Which airline is best for elderly passengers flying from the UK to Nigeria?
Compare the offered Lagos or Abuja itinerary first. A nonstop option may reduce transfers; a connecting option can suit a preferred departure airport or budget. Ask how assistance will continue at the connecting airport, whether steps are involved and how the traveller will be collected on arrival. No airline is universally best for every passenger.
Are children’s flights from the UK to Zimbabwe always discounted?
No fixed discount applies to every fare. Ask for the adult and child totals separately, including taxes, baggage and seats. For Harare or Bulawayo with an onward sector, check the child fare on the whole itinerary rather than applying a percentage to an advertised adult price.
Can I book group flights when relatives leave from London and Birmingham?
Yes, request one group plan with separate starting airports. Decide whether everyone must meet at a connection or only at the destination. Confirm each fare’s deposit, name deadline, change conditions and baggage; separate departures may not qualify for the same group contract.
