UK to Africa flights with extra baggage: compare the full cost
Compare bag-inclusive fares, extra pieces and connecting-airline allowances before booking UK to Africa flights.
Planning guidance updated . Fares, schedules and entry conditions must be checked for your trip. How we prepare our travel guidance.
Start with the bags you will actually take
Write down the number of checked bags per traveller and the packed weight of each one. “46 kg included” is not a useful description if the ticket actually permits two pieces of 23 kg and one suitcase weighs 30 kg. Keep cabin baggage, checked baggage and oversized items as separate questions.
A practical fare comparison
Illustration only, not a current fare: option A costs £590 plus £70 for a second bag in each direction, giving £730. Option B costs £680 with the required bags included, saving £50 overall. Add seat charges, agency fees and any separate domestic bag charges before choosing. Use the total for every passenger, including children.
Read the ticket, not the airline logo
British Airways distinguishes fares without checked baggage from bag-inclusive fares, and its calculator accounts for route and cabin. Emirates uses the piece system for Africa journeys; its allowance varies with route and fare. A codeshare or separate onward ticket needs its own check. Ask for the actual allowance and excess charge in the proposal.
Prepare a quote that can be compared fairly
Send the same dates, airports, passenger ages and baggage requirement for each option. If you need sports equipment, a wheelchair, musical instrument or unusually large case, give dimensions as well as weight. Do not pay for additional baggage until you know which airline must sell it for that ticket.
Official sources
Check the official source again before booking; a general guide cannot confirm an individual fare, permission or entitlement.
Your questions answered
How do I find London to Lagos or Nairobi flights with extra baggage?
Ask for two written totals: a fare that already includes your bags and the cheapest suitable fare with extra baggage added in both directions. For Nairobi with a Mombasa sector, include that flight in the comparison; the long-haul allowance does not settle a separate domestic ticket’s baggage rules.
Does an infant have the same baggage allowance as an adult?
Do not allocate an adult allowance to a lap infant without checking the ticket. Tell us whether the infant has a seat and whether you will take a pushchair or car seat. The allowance for the child, the equipment and the adult’s bags are separate parts of the quote.
Can an agent guarantee extra baggage before a ticket is issued?
Only an allowance or additional service confirmed for the proposed fare should be treated as included. A preference entered on an enquiry is a request. Keep the written quote and check the issued ticket and any additional-baggage receipt against it.
